Gravel on ‘The Nut’

Gravel on ‘The Nut’

13 October 2016

On Saturday the 8th of October there was a special delivery to the top of the Nut in Stanley. The current upgrade of the walking tracks around the top has required the lifting of over 100 bags (each weighing 800kg!). Our pilot Tim flew the majority of the day with trips backwards and forwards from the depot situated near the showgrounds to the drop sites at the top of the Nut. Ground crew from Osborne Aviation and Parks and Wildlife were up the top to guide the pilot, organise back-loads (all the straps have to get back down) and keep the public at a safe distance.

An article featured in The Advocate and can be read here. Check out a selection of images from the day opposite.

Toilets of the Three Capes Track

Toilets of the Three Capes Track

29 September 2016

Have you ever wondered what happens to the toilets you use out in the wilderness? Often they are ‘long-drop’ composting toilets that use enzymes to break matter down but in higher visited locations such as on the Overland Track and Three Capes Track in Tasmania, the volume is too much for these traditional methods so a different tactic is used.

Pods sit underneath the toilets and staff swap them over when they reach capacity. When it comes time to take out the full ones and bring in some empties, a helicopter is the best bet! Osborne Aviation was recently involved in the toilet-changing operation on the Three Capes Track.

Three Hummock Island Day Trip

Three Hummock Island Day Trip

30 August 2016

One very fine day in April 2016, we had the opportunity to make the crossing to Three Hummock Island off Tasmania’s northwest coast to get some aerial shots and meet with the island caretakers John and Bev. Here are a selection of the shots taken from the trip, unfortunately we don’t have any of the delicious lunch of local fish prepared for us by Bev.

For information on Three Hummock Island, go to their website or for an interesting read written by someone who experienced their stay there check out this article by Elspeth Callender.

Of course if you are looking for a way to get across to the island then you have come to the right place. Bookings can be made here.
